Cooking a fish from your aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't eat my own aquarium fish, because aquarium water is definitely less clean than natural water. The taste of the fish will probably be worse than the taste of the fish in nature.

I had a beautiful mated pair of green parrots die one night, after a large water change—the water turned cloudy, and I figure it was a bacterial bloom from some local (tap water) problem.

Anyway, I filetted, breaded and fried them in a little vegetable oil—delicious! A lot like walleye.
Too expensive for frequent eating though….

I get questions and/or jokes about this all the time whenever someone new comes to my house, I'm just suprised I haven't seen this topic come up on the forums until now. I personally don't think I could ever eat a fish from one of my fish tanks.

One good thing, I don't like the smell, taste, texture of fish or really anything that lives in water. So nope won't be eating any of my fish.

I’d be chill with trying it as I love fish but I still probably wouldn’t just cause of anything that could be in the water or what caused them death which would be harmful to me.

I have eaten a number of them, and they chave been quite tasty..
Especially if they get injured, or incapacitated, its much less wasteful, than tossed the trash.
My first was a large JD that got half its face bitten off in a fight.
Also eaten managuense, and Petenia, among others,
When I was in Viet Nam, I would see lots of gouramis, climbing perch and barbs in the open air markets.
Here in Panama (where I live now), cichlids and large tetras are common dinner fare.
In Argentina and Uruguay, Pacu are cooked and sold in restaurants.
Below fried Cichla (peacock bass) here on Taboga.

Did you only eat ones that were injured? You ever eat any that just died from old age? Or you woke up and seen a dead one have you ate any like that?

Farm raised fish taste like ****. I suspect aquarium raised fish wouldn’t be far off. No bueno.

I haven’t had farmed salmon (but I don’t like salmon anyway), but farmed tilapia is good, farmed catfish, and yes, tank-raised fish is good too!

I’m surprised at you, RD, for making a decision without trying it. That seems finicky or prejudiced—you are generally more sensible.
