Cool fish for a 40 gallon breeder

Oooh, I love these threads. I have TONS of suggestions for all different kinds of fish!

Catfish:
Tatias musica
(Maybe) a gulper catfish
Shadow catfish
Honeycomb catfish

Pufferfish:
As someone said a hairy puffer
A avocado puffer
A bigger school of pea puffers

Cichlids:
a single parrot cichlid
Dwarf pike
Belly crawler pike
Mbunas
Apistogrammas

of course some aren’t as compatible and all of these should not be together. Please make sure to do research before you get any of these.(I’m sure u have or will)

They will work(both of them) I was just thinking of some exotic catfish(I tend to lean towards them)

What about African Butterflyfish? Pike Livebearer. Rainbow Shiner. Gudgeons are also awesome, and pretty.

This fish species very interesting to watch in heavy plants planted setup tank.
I got a bunch of them for my tank and they show different characteristic for each of them.
Some will station between rock crevis, between plants, some lay on substrate/rock formation, some stay in open water area.
There no sight showing pecking order nor territory distribution between them, they're showing sight of stealth predator ambush, some show open water predator but not actively chasing anything down.

Are you looking for one bigger fish, or multiple fish that can live together? Something I don't see listed here are reticulated hillstream loaches. You could have several of them in there, and maybe a group of rainbow shiners for something active and colorful. The shiners aren't too common in the US hobby but can be found at a few online stores. I know you said no cichlids but I love my herotilapia multispinosa, and amatitlania nanolutea are beautiful and peaceful cichlids that stay small.
