What size cage would I need for a full grown corn snake? I was thinking a 40 gallon but would a 20 gallon also work?

You can keep them in something like a 50 litre (uk) if you wanted. I just had a look at your gallonage, and i'd go with the 40 if you have the room- why not?

a lot of people will say a 20g, but you're talking about a snake that can get over 5ft long. CA state laws requires that a snake be in a cage with a perimeter no less than 80% of the total length of the snake(don't quote me, i can't find a quote to back it up but basically a 4' snake could legally be kept in a standard 10g) but if you've ever seen a snake in a tank that small, they look really cramped and can develop lung issues. why not just give the snake the benefit of a little more room and go w/ a 40g.

To save money, you can buy a glass divider and then adjust to the length of the snake.

whats the actuall measurements needed for a 3 ft snake and a 4 ft snake (corn) please?

Well.. it depend on what people you are talking to. Some say that it should be 2/3 of the body length, some say 4/5, others say the full length. There are a few herpologists that say that it doesn't really matter as long there is enough security, and others say that it doesn't really matter to adults.

So no idea on a minimum then at least? Surely you could keep a four foot in something like a 3 ft, would have to be 4 foot?

It depends on which you agree with... really. Personally, I would say the length of the enclosure should be at least the length of the snake. Others on this forum may say differently.

Whatever you decide to go with, make sure it has a sense of security to THEIR needs, not yours.

Yeah I know of course, thats why I am asking. :)
was thinking of buying a viv about 10 ft long and about 2 maybe 3 wide and about 2/3 high that i saw at the pet shop (locking sliding doors) excellend cages like, and putting them together (adults) ? would this be better for them and have more healthy behaviour or dont corn snakes live together in the wild?

There are very few reptiles that live together. Certainly they won't try to cannibalize each others, however I don't know what the stress level it would be. I wonder if you could silicone a divider in there or not...
