Could use some input on the stocking for a 120g african oddball/community tank.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jewels are completely capable of taking care of themselves. Males are usually only aggressive towards other male Jewels.

They aren't particularly predatory, but like most species will eat just about anything small enough to fit in their mouth.

Males are a little more flashy. There are several color morphs.
Jewels are also very adaptable to varying water parameters.

It's been quite a while since I kept Jewels. One of my favorite mid sized Cichlids.

Perhaps I misunderstood but I thought you wanted to keep it African. But there was mention of Exodon tetras in the original post. Exodons are SAmerican, from Guayana, and Brazil, probably including Venezuela.
Sounds like an interesting project and I look forward to hear of your process and experience. Good luck!

I'm currently trying to decide between two different stocking options. Either a large group of exodons or the african community mentioned above. Just added it for a bit of context. No worries, definitely not going to add Exodons to the list above. That would just be a recipe or a very expensive massacre on all sides.

Exodons are my bucket list fish i would recommend them so i can live thru your tank..... Also they are like little mini piranhas very active

Yeah, a big group of Exodns has been one of my dreams for a while as well. Cost is one of the main reasons, I'm still unsure. Availability is sketchy and at the few stores I found them, they're between 15-20euros. For a group of 30ish, that adds up.

There's of course also a lot of differeng opinions on what can be housed with them or if anything at all. So for now, I'm still researching as much as possible and exploring other options. Dreading, when I have to make an actual decision...

I would keep them as a species only tank if they detect any weakness or sick fish they will pounce merciless

Check this out.

My vote is do the exodons. There is no better single species display. They stay so active. I'd set your filtration with solid directional flow.

If you don't do that I would do exactly what you're looking at but I would do a pair of the Senegalese so you can try to breed them. If your patient, I would buy the congos and just keep them for a few months to get a head start growing. If you feed aggressively, you will see them grow at a decent rate.
