They're found on the Atlantic slope of Costa Rica and Panama.
I had a pair twelve years ago. They bred just about every two weeks in a community tank.

Just got home and they're guarding a spot along a rock and chasing off everything. Male is even attacking me through the glass. Can't see eggs yet though, although that doesn't mean there aren't any.
I've got eggs. Had the fish for 5 days. Male doesn't seem very interested in protecting them though, not sure he did his duty. Female is guarding them though.
Well I shipped out four "pairs" of myrnae today, hopefully they arrive in good shape and we can get these guys spread out and breeding. 
My pair are still protecting the wrigglers, the female is the best cichlid parent I've ever owned. The male not so much. He helps out a bit but for the most part just begs for food. I'll try to get a couple photos of the female in her breeding dress, she's very dark almost black along her face and lower body, but she's hiding out with the fry so it's tough to see her.

how much for a pair? how big do they get? will be they be fine in a 30gal tank or do they need require a bigger space?
Well factoring in shipping costs and what not you'd be looking at over $100 for a pair, and I pretty much cleaned the pet store I found them in out of their myrnae. They have a couple males left. If my pair continue to be good parents I could probably have fish at a shippable size end of March.
