Crystal Clear Water for Large Tanks

I just did some reading up on Purigen and it seems to be an impressive product. It says that it controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates. If that is true then it sounds like it will probably replace my bio-filter. If that is case then it seems that I will be dependent on Purigen as all the current BB in my filter will be dead. If I was to eventually remove the Purigen, I'm guessing I would have an ammonia spike. Has anyone had this happen before?

You will have to remove the Purigen from the system to recharge it periodically. And unless you have a massive amount and recharge small amounts at a time it will affect the bio load and cause spikes. That would also be time consuming.
Best to have normal filter media and add Purigen to the sump to help polish the water.

I currently have normal filter media, my concern upon reading about Purigen was the chance that it removed all of the ammonia and thus killed my BB colony. It seems that would more than likey happen and then if the Purigen was removed because I no longer wanted to use it, that an ammonia spike would be the result. I'm just trying to reason this out but it appears to me that once Purigen is used the system would be depended on it as no other BB would exist. Would that not be the case?

I have not had that happen before, though I only use an adequate amount of Purigen for the tank it was in (not cheap over here)
I am not an expert, if you just add the required amount it should not really have a huge affect when / if you remove it. Hopefully someone can chime in with their experiences.
I know how frustrating it can be trying to get a monster tank looking crystal clear.

IMO purigen is actually a base chemical media not bio media. I would not replace all your bio media with just purigen. Even on the bottle what seachem claims it does, to me its more of a marketing gimmick. Just look at how small the purigen beads are u think there's enuf surface area for bb to grow on it? Don't get me wrong about purigen it's a great product but more used as a water polisher then used as biological filtration.

Invest in a good UV sterilizer and add filter socks and it will guarantee clear your water up.

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. You have given me material to research to see what would work best for me. Please keep them coming if others have ideas as well.
