Im sorry scotty thats terrible, just goes to show these guys shouldnt be captive bred. That really does suck, he has such a nice pattern. Im thinking its genetics in this case

There is nothing inherently wrong with the captive breeding of polys. The problem is they do it indiscriminately without regard to genetics. Captive breeding is not going to cause birth defects. Hell, I will be girst in line to buy a CB poly from you if it is not factory parentage.

In this context of course I'm referring to a defect that results from mass production. I'd be fine buying a cb that was bred on an individual basis.

Well he's still around, eating well and surfacing for air regularly. He lost a nostril the other night; I didn't watch them after I feed them and I think someone got too nippy. His external gills are turning grey but not getting smaller; does this mean they are going to go away?uploadfromtaptalk1384475991305.jpguploadfromtaptalk1384476009767.jpg

Not sure about the external gills turning color, but they make it look like an axolotl in that pic. Not sure if it is a problem but it is certainly unique.

I had an ornate around 10 inches that had a spine that curved a bit sideways but she was one of the most voracious eaters in the tank. She was like that when I got her and I had her for several months. I traded her away to make room for other fish (I already had 3 other ornates,) so i am not sure if she is still alive. The curved spine made her swim funny, but never slowed her down.

Unless the curved spined is impacting its ability to survive and eat, etc, i would just let it live out its life.

Thats the thing, unless its someone like us breeding them (i got nothing against that, my ornate is F1 from a friend who bred his pair out) and it comes from a farm its guranteed inbred and theres a chance something will go wrong. I wish some people in the US took it as seriously as some do in Japan, they breed quality not quantity. Which is the way breeding any animal should be, some farmies are great though dont get me wrong.

Thats good to hear though scotty, long as hes eating and pooping hes good lol
