If your african is a mbuna, it will eventually turn on the pleco.

You can try it if you're willing to risk it. You can add stuff to the pleco tank dude. Schooling fish would work. Rams would work. They'd be better than the mbuna (I assume that's what you have).

Any idea how a dwarf puffer fish would do with the pleco? I know they are aggressive but I've heard of success with plecos.

That is a mbuna, looks like a socolofi to me. My guess would be he will be okay with the pleco. If it does go sour, if you bring him to a petstore as a donation, they will probably take him. I've kept a few African tanks in my years in the hobby, and I have always had some kind of pleco in there with them.

Don't get a puffer. They are viscous unless kept with an even more aggressive fish and even that isn't a sure thing. I have one that killed 2 plecos.

I'm not a fan of Africans, I see them as a dime a dozen. He's a good looking fish, don't get me wrong. Very beautiful, but I would pick the pleco over the cichlid in this case.
You could add some tetras or some other schooling fish to add movement to the tank.
In a larger tank you could get away with keeping both fish, but you'll be pushing your luck putting them together.

If I were able to bring the cichlid and unload him to some place. What could I put with the pleco and shrimp in the 20g Long? I like tiger barbs. I really don't like tetras that much.

I'm not that knowledgeable on schoolers. A 30gl I think is recommended for a proper size school of tiger barbs. And that's just for them, not taking into account other fish.

I'm not really crazy about tetras either. lol
I like guppies and mollies a lot more. They are more active, have a larger color variety to choose from, and are small and don't add too much to the bio load of the tank. They would go well with the pleco and shrimp.

The reason why they tell you to keep tiger barbs in schools is to keep them occupied so they don't maul everyone else, and I highly doubt they would try to maul a pleco. I have Praecox aka Dwarf Neon Rainbows in my 55, they are beautiful, tough, active and will fit in your tank. Plecos like to eat shrimp, as far as I know. Mine definitely did. Mollys and guppies are tough active and breed with no input from you, they are another possibility. Any community fish will get along with a pleco.
