This sump is for my 29gal, I plan to make the overflow using 1" pvc, The return pump that i am using is the "quiet one 1200". The output size is 1/2"MPT, should I keep the return plumbing 1/2" all the way back to the tank. The head height is just over 3.5 ft. Any recommendations on the overflow and the return plumbing.
You want to keep the return plumbing a minimum of 1/2". It is ok to go larger but you won't see an improvement in performance (because aquarium systems are so small). One inch is fine for the overflow.

It is way too late in the day for me to track down a pump curve for that pump, but look at the sticky thread in the "setup" section about sizing pumps on how to do the math. I think that one will be fine (I am only going off of its size in the picture).

I won't be back for several days, so I won't be able to answer any questions until then.

Very nice,is that 1/4 in acrylic?
yes it's 1/4" Acrylic, it's cool because that's what I wanted to use originally and that is the size that my grandpa had lying around the house...:headbang2

Thanks Chompers you are the W/D GURU:headbang2

I had alread looked at the curve at that head height it is still going to be above 200gph heres the link for whoever is inquiring the same question http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_Aquar..._lifegard_quiet_one_information.html#qone1200

Thanks again, I just wanted to make sure that is was okay to keep the return line 1/2" because that is what the fitting is. :)

That turned out really nice. I have a spare 10g I plan on using for this purpose.
Go for it, let me know if I can help, here is the diagram that I made up for the 10gal hopefully it can help... I planned to somehow add the bio wheel, then later decieded I didn't want it, maybe you can craft it in somehow. Oh the width of the pump is actually 2 3/4".
