Google SketchUp is the way to go. I spent a lot of time playing with the design in it before I came up with the final plan that I was happy with. You also get a very good idea of what the final product will look like in 3D.

I've enjoyed this tank/stand for about a year and a half now...
BUT...

If I were to build this stand again, I would make it 4 inches taller, so that there is more height room inside for the sump and/or filters.

Where did you get the driftwood? Awsome everything! I bow down This guy I know is gonna quote me on a hood and diy filter...for a 185 gallon what would that run usually?
