Something like this----
That way you don't have to dump it all out for filter pad maintenance, cause its on top. ----------just an idea ----what do you think

i like both ideas you guys got going here. i was thinking of making a diy canister yesterday actually because a quiet1 4000 i ordered off of ebay came. my first thoughts were of trying to some how upgrade the motor of a fluval 304 though, figured it'd just be easier to make my own. not to get off topic but any more diy canister ideas floating around out there?

The 8 inch project will have to wait until summer, since now I will be pretty busy starting the construction of my next home.

Hybrid... yes, I like your setup; it is that way the other canister will be made, because yes it is annoying to remove everything just to get to the filter pad. BTW, I have a magdrive 9.5 that will be used for it.

I even had another idea; make multiple canisters all hooked up in series, one for filter pads, one for whaterver chemical media, and another for bio. It would be seperated from eachother by ball valves, and they would have each their own drain valve.

To anybody that says...a sump is alot better and cheaper... I say: I had one on my 90 gal and hated it. Sound is inevitale with sumps, even well tuned, plus WOW can you say evaporation.

what about the siphon of water back from aquarium to the filter.
You can etheir make it as tall as the tank, or have it setting level with the tank, or a ball valve, or a hole in the tube for a syphon break and only take it apart at water change time. There is several ways to make anything work.

I was contemplating on doing a sump but after seing this, I've changed my mind. ...a few questions though:

- what materials would someone need for a 125 Gal.?
- multiple canister set up sounds good... how do you do it? schematics?
- can you also add a heater on one of the canisters?
- I also live in Montreal (West Island)... is St. Remi far?

Thanks in advance and good luck with your projects.
