I've read that they don't work in freshwater - I've also used one in fresh water, and have since stopped due to poor results.

A saltwater skimmer won't work with freshwater due to the difference in densities. I've only seen three designs that were intended for freshwater. The OP's picture is actually a saltwater design, but the same company has a freshwater version. For the most part, freshwater skimmers need a high bio-load to function.

Drip systems are a better alternative for most aquariums. Regular water changes are also a better alternative since water is cheap. In those parts of the world where water is a scarce resource, freshwater skimmers can be the difference between an aquarium or a pet rock.

a freshwater protein skimmer does a great job in a pond cause it's using to remoove the inorganic matter from the water, and theres a lot in a pond!
check some freshwater skimmers working:

What about an algae scrubber? They work great on fresh water. I think that would be more beneficial on a pond.
