the plan is to have the pipes a 12" diameter, so i hope it will be big enough. i may mirror two of them with one at each end of the tanks. or have three seperate pipes with their own pump, effectively trippling the flow. but with that each pipe would need its own complete set of media and it would make it much harder to make it wetdry. i'll figure it out though and post pics and progress.

I thought of doing something similar but unless you can find cheaper fittings it was very cost prohibitive. I like the Idea but the price for any fittings over 6" wher I'm at was insane. I have decided to go with a wet dry system under tank now but I still want to do a DIY canister type filter like this some day but likely out of 4" just a thought but if you ran 4" the length of the back of your tank and criss crossed it back and forth you could hide it easily with a background and maintain a majority of the depth of the tank. I would still put it outside personally but if you want it internal then go for it. good luck and keep us posted.

fittings aren't too bad here, its like 6 bucks for a cap, also i could always just silicone some old plexi to the base to save money. and the point of 12" diameter is to increase the initial contact surface area to cut down on cleaning the thing. 4" would clog to fast and require alot of pressure which would need bigger pump and so on.

even at 12" diameter how tall is each pipe going to be?
