I had been tossing around ideas for an inexpensive Ozone system for a few days and it is now in operation. I like to design with things that are commonly available and for as little as possible.
Ozone systems will basically do the same thing as a UV sterilizer but with the added benifit of chemically consuming nitrates, and destroying dissolved organics. I don't have first hand experience with either so I let a tank get out of hand so I could measure the results.
I was convinced that I wasn't going to do a DIY thread on it, so I didn't take suitable pictures. Anyway, where pictures are lacking, I'll post the finished product and explain it the best that I can.
I'd like to start backwards with the system at the carbon bed because this is what everyone familiar with reef systems will be familiar with. At the end of the thread, I'll post a video of the system in operation to illustrate it all.
Here is the Carbon Bed. It is the 2" pipe...Nothing special really...
The carbon bed converts the ozone back into oxygen after it has been allowed to do its thing.
