Where will the filter be in relation to the tank. Above, below, or beside?

it will be beside the pond and it will be on both ends of the pond since im going to make 2 of them....

should it be where the water flow goes into the filter or should it go where the water flow goes out of the filter into the pond?

My design will work perfectly as long as the bucket is below the water level of the pond. If its an inground pond just bury it or if its an above ground then just set it next to it. If your worried about filtration just dont add quite as much water so that the level in the bucket is lower and will create a "dry" cavity of media. This will give you wet/dry filtration as the water trickles down. The oxygen helps grow benificial bacteria. It will make your two buckets much more efficient and effective at cleaning the water for your monster fish. Good Luck! Im going to be using this filtration method on my shed 2000 gallon native tank.

If you really want it above the water level just have an overflow box in the pond with a pump plumbed to the top of the bucket and then plumb the bottom of the bucket back to the pond. Same thing just using different physics.

ok thanks you guys for the big help on this new filtration im working on for my indoor above ground pond/tank...=D

Just my thoughts but you'll need more than two. On my 350 gal pond I have two fluval Fx5s as prefilters plumbed directly into a 55 gal barrel that is stuffed with pot scrubbies. The fluvals are 5 gals a piece plus the 55 gal barrel that's about 3/4ths full of scrubbies. So your looking at around 50 gals of filtration right there. How many fish? Just one 3' catfish.
