Do air pumps really provide oxygen into the water?

1 sentence,

Bubbles do not oxygenate the water, it's the gas exchange they create when they reach the surface that oxygenates the water.

Well that and the fact they also move water from the bottom to the top as it will follow the reduction in pressure caused by the bubbles movement thus allowing water molecules to reach the surface from the source of the bubbles. They will also carry a small amount of the dissolved solids to the surface away from the fishies :)

another thing I think nobody mentioned is that the warmer the water is, the harder it is for it to hold oxygen.

why don't you just run the canister and the HOB?

but what about producing too small of bubbles (microbubbles) that can actually hinder the O2 absorption by clinging onto the gill surface area?

Can't make micro bubbles with stated equipment so no need to worry about it. But yes they can block the fishes gills and decrease their function.

Oh, I think you missed my point. I'm not fighting science, Im disreguarding it.

And why can't you take a compliment?

I do, but quietly ;), thank you.

I refer you back to my previous posts.

In simpler terms bubbles have surface area just like ..."the surface of the tank" hence "oxygen" or gas exchange with bubbles. there is a gas release at the surface when the bubbles erupt thru the water surface causing surface agitation and disrupting the surface tension of the water furthering the gas exchange at the surface.
You can't stop this effect at the pressures we are working with...
So, bubble do work.

I love science and facts.

lksdlkasdlka oh gawsh.. what came first, the chicken or the egg?

I was just answering the guys question without a bunch of yada yada

Let me ask you - If the bubbles were unable to break the surface, would they still oxygenate the water?

PS. a canister output above the water surface is going to be 10x better than any airstone garbage IMO..

Sounds like you just want to be right and sound smart..

so you can be right.. :) even though my post basically agrees with all your technical mumbo jumbo but whatever makes ya feel good about yourself
