First off i'm not sure if this is true for all algae kill products but it is for the one i used(Tetra Algae Control).I had an algae outbreak last week in one of my tanks,I think it's the first one I ever had or at least remember having:).Went to store ,spent 1/2 hour choosing between 4 items, bought the Tetra brand because it's well known and it said "Will not harm fish" (not entirely true). It also said not to use with invertebrates or crustaceans, well I'd like to add Hybrids to the list.

I had two Flowerhorns in the tank, they were healthy and hardy fish.Came home from store and treated tank with Algae Control that night. The next morn low and behold they were both dead, floaters, pushing daisies, caput ,whatever:eek:.Wierd hah,it didn't hurt any of the other cichlids or cat fish in the tank at all.So on the safe side if you have an algae outbreak and use an algae killer,Please remove your Flowerhorns or maybe even all Hybrids,I will from now on.

Thats all I have to say about that.

Sorry about your loss.
Algae kill products are for people that are lazy and dont know what they are doing. That's just my opinion.
If you know what you are doing, you don't need risky chemicals.

Make sure and keep an eye on the other fish too. Sometimes those Algae killers can
suck all of the oxygen out of the tank. Again, that sucks about the FH.

I found this out the hard way as well. It would slowly kill my fish though. Couldnt figure it out at all...until I had moved a fish showing symptoms(having seizures), and put it in my other tank that I have never used algae killer on. Fish went back to normal. DONT use that junk....do wc's instead.

if you have an algae problem invest in magnet cleaners and razors........

The dead algae and any decaying matter can use up all the oxygen which is why algae killing chemicals can severely harm and even kill the fish.

:iagree: Or correct what exactly caused the algae.

Sorry for your loss, starve the light and water change the problem away

Algae = too much food and too much light and warmth

Buy snails, water change, cut down on the heat and light a bit and ride it out.

Or get another tank, move all your fish into that, use the algae killer stuff and then do a thorough cleaning. The first option, while longer is probably better.

I never recommend algae chemicals. Its easy to just clean it out manually. Clean as much as you can, do water changes and things like that and the algae isnt an issue. Sorry about your losses, I always fear losing fish when using chemicals and meds etc.
