I have a platy fry (nursery) tank and i've noticed blood looking spots at the bottom, and small orange pieces and a few missing, is this normal?

YES, OH MY GOD YES. The blood looking spots don't sound normal, but the missing fry, and pieces are normal. All the community livebearers will eat their babies, although, I have heard of single instances where they haven't.

I have never seen fry eat other fry unless they are dying or dead. I do know that molly fry will attack any fry that is sick or dying.

Sorry, I missed the first fry. They will eat dead babies, that explains the pieces. Missing, can be explained by the same thing. What kind of filter do you have?

they are in a 10 gallon with a top fin 10 filter with pantyhose covering so they don't get sucked up

The pantyhose is all I needed to know. Are they inbred? That could cause a higher death rate. Sorry for the original post, that is what happens when I try to think after a 15 hour work day.

They could be, but not certain, they were bought from the same store, but months apart- bought the females 2 or 3 months before i got the male. I still have at least 50, but looks like the smaller ones that the second platy had are mostly gone ? Maybe i'm just miss counting because i never could figure out the exact number, but i dont' know what the little red/browish spots are on the bottom of the tank? and the little pieces of orange are if they are not from the fish, they are only fed the hiraki first bites 4 times a day and the tank is cleaned daily-water change and suction the bottom

if the fry are of different ages then the older ones may attack the younger.
it could be even if they are not being fed enough.
