That's funny, but it's the correct manner in which to measure TL. (closed mouth)

Oh I know. And to be honest when measuring I got 15 twice flipped the fish, and got a little different measurement. So I tried laying the fish on top of the tape. I wish at the time I had a fabric tape because laying the hard tape on him was giving some inconsistent measurements.Yeah, no doubt that he is one big bubba. Thanks for the extra pics, I wasn't calling you out or anything, the initial photo just looked odd in how the tape was showing.
Yeah I should have did that as well. But he’s in the ground now.The tape should never touch the fish, it should lay just below the fish as shown in the link I just posted.
From the IFGA: "Avoid the biggest error, do not use a tape measure pulled over the body of the fish, it will increase the measurement since the tape has to bend over the rounded body mass of the fish. Place the tape measure on the ground or a hard surface and then place the fish on top of it. "
Yes that is it. Their was some na sayers if I remember correctly. I need to read it all again. No worries, I think that it's fair to say that it was a very large festae.
In your initial comment you posted; "With discussions about one reaching 20” or more."
I posted that topic, the fish in question was measured by a biologist in the field (Ecuador), and it was recorded as being 50 cm, which is just a hair under 19 3/4 inches. https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/20-inch-ex-cichlasoma-festae.515375/
Thank you. He was pretty special to me.Regardless of measurement or weight, he was truly a top notch specimen. Beautiful fish.
