That makes no sense. If you acknowledge it isn't the store's responsibility after the fish is sold, then why would you avoid shopping at a place that doesn't offer refunds for dead fish? LFS in my area don't offer refunds, and they're business is just fine, and they have a huge customer base...

Its purely principle. Just because I feel this way does not mean the LFS should not have a policy. It just good business practice.

It depends. Some LFS in my area offer refunds on a dead fish with a water sample. The time frame is about 1-2 days after the fish was sold. The stores raise the fish prices because of that.

I do not mind if the stores offer no refunds on a dead fish because it was alive and healthy when I first bought it.

Big box stores, I usually do not shop there for fishes. I do not care if they have a refund policy.

True, this is why finding a good LFS is important. Even then, watching the fish for a few minutes will tell you a lot. It's easy to spot a fish that is sick. If you're in doubt, ask them to feed the fish. I rarely buy fish from my LFS anymore..

But I also know that there are some really awesome LFS's out there and at the same time some really stupid people. I read your market place reviews I know you are the kind of person you would want to buy from.

Very good points and so true.

IF I ownded an LFS I would have the water sample 2 day rule just to make people question if it was their care. Because if they didn't know about water wuality they probably killed the fish in that way or another and would probably accept responsibility as opposed to shame.

Store I work at has a 5 day guarantee. Have to bring in the body of the fish as well as the original receipt. We don't require a water sample. In some cases we will waive the guarantee if the tank is not suitable for the fish.

That's a good idea. How do you make sure they're telling the truth though. Some people will tell you that their newly bought goldfish is going in a pond and then go stick it in little Johnny's room in a bowl for him to overfeed and watch die.

Unfortunately you can't. After a while you do tend to get an idea of what people keep in the area though. Even just having a basic conversation with them you can develop an idea of how they care for their fish. In any case we will only replace the fish once. In the extreme case where peoples fish are dying off like crazy we will require a water sample.

my lfs has a one week policy of fish as long as you bring the fish in with a receipt and a separate water sample. As long as there water checks out they get a replacement fish or store credit. There are some exceptions though, such as when people continuously come in with dead fish week after week, we will cut them off. we can also void the guarantee if we so choose if customer ignored our advice when we were selling the fish and we feel the fish won't make it. Very few people actually take advantage of it though.
