Driftwood- Apple Tree

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ahha I was thinking the same thing.

So, here we go again: HarleyK, thanks for that detailed explanation. I appreciate your time spent. I do however have one more question: The branches have been dead and COMPLETELY DRY for 4 years now and has been hosed off by 4 years of Mother Nature's rain and snow. It is completely dry again. Do you think I can just sterilize it with a salt solution? Thanks

4 years Id say not,4 years in a river is much different.
But this thread has made me think.I have a few old,I mean really old apple trees way back in the woods in my yard. Some branches were dead and bark free looking like driftwood 16 years ago when I got the place.Might try some of those if theres any cool looking pieces.Have to take a hike down there sometime next week, when I got time.

The wood I am using is now soaking for those interested in the end results.

I still doubt that old dry wood is equivalent to well-watered wood, but keep us posted! Make sure to measure (and please report) water parameters such as ammonia and nitrites, but also nitrates and phosphates. Thanks!

HarleyK, I also doubt the wood will work so I put it in a cycled test tank. Here are some updates:

Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 15 ppm

There are no visible organic tannins in the water. I didn't think it was going to work but so far so good. There have not been any deaths. The wood has been in the tank for 3 weeks now.

Howdy,

Nice update, thanks

Three weeks is not a whole lot in terms of rotting wood, but keep going, there is only one way to find out and you're taking it :)
