Drilled Tank vs. Overflow Boxes

If you decide to drill the bottom, make sure your bottom pane isn't tempered (my 180 has a tempered bottom; All Glass Brand).

If it is tempered, it will shatter if drilled.

Good luck !!!!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Drilling is always better, heck I have a 55 Gallon I got of CL and I was sad to find its all Tempered and now I have to have a dumb overflow box. I don't care what any one says an over flow box can always fail. If you have big fish that make big splashes, those splashes can introduce bubbles into the overflow. The only way a drilled tank will fail to drain is if something clogs it, but hey if your drilling you might as well drill 2 drains. I was saved by having a second drain, I noticed my water level was a little higher then normal, after checking it out I found one drain was clogged.

@Bee

Sorry to some what derail. Do you find that you can hear your overflow sucking in air? I have the same type of over flow and it was always sucking in air; even if I turned the 90 to the bottom of the tank. It would just create a full siphon drain low enough to start sucking air. I fixed this by putting a Tee on the outside instead of a 90 going in to the tank. I then capped the top of the Tee and drilled a small hole in it so now it sucks air from the Tee.
