Durso stand pipe silencer??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The purpose of a durso is to create a gravity fed drain that never siphons. There are various design advantages you can take advantage of to create a layers of redundancy. Assuming you have only one drain I would assume too much air is getting pulled in. I'd also play with pump flow a bit.

I think the air is mixing with the water at the bottom of that 90.

I’m very sure the 90 is making all the noise because there is air in there so thought my durso have to be full siphon in order to make it silence. I have total of 2 drains. The other side is less of a run since it’s also connected to an 90 but straight to flex hose to filter sock. The sumps sock is on the right side of the tank so the left side is where all the loud noise is coming from. Currently I have a 1/16” id hose stuck into the durso about 8” long which sucking all the air to create the siphon. I tried by taking the full U shape out and sticking a larger diameter into just the stand pipe and it did stop the gurdleing sound. Currently the 1/16” hose stop that sound but @ the 90 it’s noisy.

You can greatly increase flow/gph and reduce noise if you can turn that drain into a full siphon. Like BIg G said you just need to get a valve on that line. Do you have any bulkheads that can be used as E drains ? If not then no big deal since your already running the system with out one

I have 2 drains and 2 returns. One side drain has to travel a longer distance (90 with 36” pvc to flex hose) to the filter sock (sump) so at that 90 is where the setup has the most noise. The other side where it’s just 90 straight into a flex hose to sock which is about 15” of hose has the less noise. If I can fix this I think my system will alright. Till I mess around with the 180 with herbie. ;)

When you don't have enough air the drains overflows should go up and down, creating a siphons when there's enough pressure until it catches air. You can dial the air flow back until that happens and let a bit more in. You have to play around with it a bit to get it to minimize noise.

However if you have two drains and the tank is not leveled you can end up with one taking the brunt of the flow. I don't know the science behind it but the heavier flow drain seems to start to chop air and water together and create the same effect as a protein skimmer. If you add meds to water you would notice foamy discharge at the drain site. I think the previous owner of my set up used a gate valve to cut the flow on the "main drain" so that the second drain (which had a long horizontal run compared to the main) could even out and stop this phenomenon. I don't sleep well at night gating off my drains.

My tank is leveled flat on ground and I do think that the main drain (shorter run) drain is taking more than the other side. I do have to play around with those air intake tubes and hear what’s the best to silence or eliminate most of the noise. One thing for sure is that it doesn’t go up and down which means that it’s getting enough air but I guess I have to dial it to the drainage.

Why are the two runs not equal lengths ?

Was that 90 always noisy ? Air is getting trapped there for some reason.

Did you reduce gph recently?

Theres nothing unsafe or reason to not sleep at night with putting a gate valve on a drain.
In essence all your doing is purging all air which increases flow and adds a degree of control into your hands. But yeah i guess this is for the 180 :D

soupa2 soupa2 In your second image with the plumbing I see two lines. Would it be possible to put a valve below the tank on the line with the durso?
just remove the elbow and replace it with a strainer and set the flow so that it is submerged and running a full siphon. Then use the other line to take up the small trickle of water turning the overflow into a herbie style.
You may have to shorten the main pipe a little to submerge it completely.
If you have never heard a herbie style drain they are very quiet.

The current 330 setup are set to durso and I don’t want to change that but just to silence it. The sump are setup where the right side of the sump have dual filter sock for each of the drains. Each end of the tank have one 3/4”return and 1.5” for drain. Just the left side drain has to travel a longer distance to get to the socks.

Oh yeah i get not wanting to change it now. So was it always noisy?

That is possible to do since herbie is just setup with a gate valve where I control that valve’s drainage to get it quite.

To tell you the truth the system have been like that since I move into this house (3yrs) and eat time I feed and shut the pump off it’s dead quit since the other 120 n 180 r running with eheim 2262s x 3. It’s just the 330 and back than 300 marineland DD have all the noise in the basement. But this only bother us while we watch TV since our rooms are all upstairs.

I like big g's idea of turning it into a siphon. Thats why i was asking how many drains u have. Hoping to turn one into an e drain but since you are running the system with out one now no big deal in not having it going forward.....or use the other drain as an e drain. How big are the drain bulkheads ? What gph are you running atm ?
