Was watching the tv series River Monsters and the featured fish was The electric eel. The thing is that is not really an eel, is actually a knife fish. I doubt it but, does any one keep them or kept them before?

Very interesting animal and is a monster too.

I believe I've seen a few members on here before with one, and in some cases with multiple. Just got a job at my LFS, maybe I'll talk to the owner about ordering one in. :D lol

We got a 30" electric eel in the basement at my LFS.

I hope I am not the one who has to catch it.

Cool.....but why is it in the basement?

I had 5 of them before and they grew fats till reaching close to 4 feet and slow down from there and yes they are knifefish and not an eel. More closely related to the carapo knifefish and tiger knifefish as both are from the same family gymnotidae. They eat like there is no tomorrow and will eat just pretty much anything you offer them. They are also an air breather.

i have 3 of them and i love them there all about 2 to 3ft each the only one that doesnt get along with them is the african lungfish but they been living to gether for the past2 years together and a bunch of other fish

cool....ever been shocked ?

... i watched that last night too. Somehow, I knew that someone would be asking where they can be bought today. Lol... I wouldn't think they would be very interesting in an aquarium setting tho. Would make water changes a PITA to say the least
