Electric yellow Cichlid tank mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have my yellow labs in a 55 with Zebra Obliquidens, a lake Victoria cichlid. There was some trial and error at first and I lost a few of the yellow labs but everything has balanced out. I have 9 Labs and 10 zebras.

I've kept yellow labs with lots of different fish. Kept them with demasonis, parrot cichlids, synodontis, etc. Hell, one time I kept a yellow lab in a holding tank with south american cichlids and it was fine. I would be cautious when adding fish like that with yellow labs though, you'll never know. Most succesful out of all these tankmates would be synodontis catfish, so that's what I'll recommend.

I decided to put some plants in the tank with the seconds to see how they would react and they seem to enjoy the plants but there’s trying to go algae on the plans. I was wondering if there are any algae eating Fish that I could put with them

What kind of plants are you using? Plants with weaker leaves will get eaten in the process.
If they’re still in the 20, I wouldn’t add anything.
In a bigger tank, a bristlenose pleco is always a good option.
Mbuna are primarily herbivorous and will pick at algae (and plants).

OK, thank you for the information I have jungle, Val plants, and a couple others
I’ll try a baby bristlenose Pleco

I don't find the BN eat algae from plants...only glass. And even then coverage is spotty...literally...so I still have to scrape.

I had better luck with algae on plants by 1-low nitrates, 2-minimal light and 3-strong plant growth.

Agreed - nothing beats manual removal.

Val is tough and grows fast, I wouldn’t expect a pleco to spend much time on it though.
I can’t stress more - don’t add any fish until there’s a bigger tank.
