Big wels catfish are often stockier than smaller ones, but not only because they have more fat, but also more muscle-mass. 400 pounds would be much too less for a wels of the length you estimated. The world rekord specimen weighed already 144kg at 2,78m.
HUH??? 144kg is 317 pounds and 2.78 meters is 9.12 feet... 400 pounds is right on target for a 12-14 wells...:screwy:

Eitherway It's all jokingly since this fish is somewhere in the 7-8' range

Give the answer as people want to know and you have had the weekend to let people wonder

ummmm.....
It's BIG!

So, here´s the truth. This wels was 2,36m in length and had a weight of 105kg and 600g. This is a true monster, one of the biggest specimens on record. But the forced perspective makes it looking even much bigger. Thank you for your input guys! And congratulations for all of you who came close to the right dates.
And for basslover: A wels (only with one "l" btw) of 12-14 feet (3,6-4,2m) would even with comparably slim proportions weigh about 270 (at 12) - 420kg. Weight increases with the cube, and even comparably small differences can have huge effects.
Here are also some nice photos of some of the largest wels catfish on record, including the one I posted: http://www.fisch-hitparade.de/fischhitparade/all/67-wels_waller.html

Veacane, I suppose just think that the european wels catfish has similar proportions than the american flathead catfish. Their heads and bodies up to the tail look very similar, but the wels has a highly elongated tail, so its proportions are very different.
