Consistency in tank parameters goes a lot farther than trying to maintain very specific levels. Most fish will be fine unless the parameters are at extremes.
I totally agree in most instances as long as the water parameters are around neutral most fish are fine, though growth may be slowed down a little. I've gotta agree about the P-Bass eating his tankmates in the near future. Their growth rate is pretty impressive and their mouth cavernous so it could become a real problem.

The peacock bass is gone but that fish was tank raised in city water by a local breeder who doesn't even use declor or any type of conditioner on any of his fish. I don't either for that mater and have never had a casualty from water quality. My system is on a constant drip of freshwater and that p-bass was completely off live or frozen and grew over an 1 1/2 per month. I'm no biologist but I would say more things were right than wrong.

Yep p-bass is gone, he ate about 5 juvenile syno multies. Oh well it was fun while it lasted.
