i have a visitherm deluxe heater coming in for my oscar very soon, what would be the ideal all-around temperature? i read that this heater can keep temps extremely tight, i was thinking 78F or so

temp is a funny thing for trops. a lower temp will reduce the heart rate and in effect you can feed less and they will live longer. high temps will make the fish more active and they will eat more but live shorter lives. its all a balance. oscars need a colder temp to breed and i actually add a bag of ice to my large tank to induce egg laying, it works every single time. personally i keep all my tanks at about 77 but each to his own

For some reason 80F became the standard for tropical fish, many Cichlids require that temperature as well but that does not mean all. Most Cichlids like temperatures anywhere from 70F to 80F.

If you are anywere around 75-78F, you should be perfect.

20-30 minutes a pound @ 325 degrees, brushed regularly with lemon butter. :naughty: :grinno:

I don't use a heater. My oscars tank is anywhere between 72-78 F season depending.

i keep mine at 80 ive heard that it lowers the chance of parasites. they are always very active.

I think that it is more the consistency of the temperature that's important. I have 3 oscars that I've had for quite awhile and I keep my tanks at 80. They are extremely active and have never been sick..... (knocking on wood......)
