Ive been feeding my pacu a mix of Cichlid Staple and catfood (more catfood than cichlid staple) for about a week now and was wondering if this is safe for the fish. Is this dangerous to the fish, or can i continue doing this. My reason for feeding catfood is because of how much the pacu eats, and cichlid pellets can get a little expensive after a while. Right now my pacu is around 15 in. and can eat about 30 pieces of catfood in a minute easily. Hes in a 240 with a oscar and jag.

In breeder ponds in brazil they use what is essentially a dog food, similar to cat food but more of a round pellet, they probably dirty the water more than the specialized foods but with a single pacu eating them so quickly that should be less of an issue.

What to look into is if the cat food provides all of the necessary nutrition.

OK, until he starts to meow, then stop! :D

I started feeding my Pacu cat food too after I noticed just how much she could eat.

Little bag of fish food = $5. GIANT bag of cat food = $20.

I haven't noticed any adverse effects. Of course, I always feed fruits and veggies too, with the occasional pieces of fish and shrimp thrown in.

Some people freak out at the thought but alot of kio owners feed there fish dog food. And i used to feed my oscars dog food as well mainly cause that is what they fed at the lfs to all there large cichlids. I fed puppy chow cause it has more protein in it. And the fish made it to 12'' and never any hole in the head or anything like that. i had it for about 8 years and then gave it away. It was fed dog food since 3'' when I got it.
