Feeding prawn, shell on or off?

I went to my local supermarkets ie Tesco and Morrisons and alls i could find was cooked prawns? Where can i get raw prawns from as even my local butcher doesn't sell them? (in the uk)

Not sure about the UK-- in the states I've found raw frozen shrimp to be pretty widely available. Is there a fish monger/fish market nearby? A butcher probably wouldn't stock seafood....

Totally agree that rays eat whole foods in the wild and the closer we match the better, they eat a lot of crustaceans and there for anything shell on has to be good. They don't cook their own food in the wild.

You can buy the prawns off the fresh fish counter, I am sure they are not cooked but you have to know they have been frozen before so must not be re-frozen which causes some logistical issues. Itthink this is why people just buy frozen prawns and keep them frozen as opposed to fresh. I think these may have been cooked but it is better than nothing and those ones are peeled etc.....

I asked the fish counter in Tesco and they had no raw prawns but he did send me down the fresh isle and i found a small container of raw king prawns for £3.00 they have been frozen and they are peeled but at least they are raw. Phew now to find some shrimp etc as i want a varied diet for them?

Not many fish-mongers around here just butchers which also sell small amounts of fish?

i feed raw peeled prawns, muscles & live worms the worms come from local fishing tackle shop & frozen food (prawns, muscle) from local tescos or iceland & as a treat once in a while i will buy live snails from local pet shop but they do leave the shell its like they suck out the soft body but they are like £2-3 each depedant on size & type so it is just a treat something between meals mainly to give the rays something different to do.

Well in the river.. there would probably be a ton of crayfish shells left all over the river bed.. but the natural process and the huge volume of water.. probably has a huge contrast compared to our home tanks..
It would be good to let the rays eat the prawn with the shell on.. they swallow some.. the leave some behind.. jus fish them out.. thats usually wat i do.. on a day u get lazy.. shell them first den...
My big boys would usually chomp up and leave some behind.. Its also fun to watch them eat and slowly remove the shells tatically.. Its a fun process IMO..
