Feeding smelt

I live in cape may, nj. Needless to say fresh seafood is easy to come by. My local acme sells fresh smelt, whole, for 4.99 per lb. my RTC takes it from my hand as soon as it hits the water. My question is, is smelt bad for him to eat? He loves it and it's cheap food, since one fish fills him up for the day, and you get like 20 fish per lb. it's raw, and whole minus the head.

They are good but not as a sole food because of thiaminase(google)
Try offering him 50% smelt,preferably + the head, and 50% various others.

Thanks. He also gets frozen jumbo shrimp(shell on) and jumbo hikari gold. Is that sufficient?

Just want to add that I'm eating friend whole smelt right now with lobster tail, crawfish, and conch meat. Delicious Friday night dinner.

if the hikari makes up 80% of the diet it is, otherwise, no. too much thiaminase.

They are delicious. Fry em up whole. Bone and all. They are like little fish fingers.

I like cod and pollock. Less fat and I think it might be less expensive, too, at least where I live.
