I live in cape may, nj. Needless to say fresh seafood is easy to come by. My local acme sells fresh smelt, whole, for 4.99 per lb. my RTC takes it from my hand as soon as it hits the water. My question is, is smelt bad for him to eat? He loves it and it's cheap food, since one fish fills him up for the day, and you get like 20 fish per lb. it's raw, and whole minus the head.

They are good but not as a sole food because of thiaminase(google)
Try offering him 50% smelt, preferably + the head, and 50% various others.

Sounds good. Of course if you find any other cool treats you can feed them but not a must.

From the way they smell when I feed my fish, I thought they taste disgusting. Lol :D
