Feeding your fish dogg food ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Why would you want to buy fish, and feed them dog food? If you want to feed dog food to something, feed it to a dog.

My dog eats fish food if I leave it unattended

i've actually never heard of this, thats crazy, our dogs food would defineatly be too big for any of our fish to handle (we have a LARGE dog)

My dog is over 200 pounds! How big is your dog! :D

I would just feed fish food as I have said earlier, but I know that there are zoos/public aquaria that feed dog food to pacu.

I don't think that's a good idea and wouldn't even use it as a treat, why would you feed DOG food to a fish? You might as well inject them with steroids for fast growth.

Good things come to those who wait. Feed em a high quality pellet specially developed for em and they will sooner or later reach their full potential. I'd rather wait than having a fish growing like a monster and dying before maturity because of a health problem. If you think your fish is not growing fast enough you can try doing more water changes and power feeding.

@FLESHY-our dogs only 130 pounds lol hes got a bit of growing left to do (hes only a year) but probably won't get near the 200 mark- he's a male bernese mountain dog and hes a big one and the vet/we are expecting him to finish around 160 pound- he still sleeps in the bed with us though regardless of size lol

I've heard of dog food being used at fish hatcheries and farms. I'm assuming that the caloric density of dog food is extremely high and the protein levels are probably higher than fish food. The growth gains would be high. There could possibly be longterm effects, but there are no clinical studies to support the idea that pet foods can't be fed to fish.

Beef and chicken (which are fine for dogs) contain fats that can't be digested by most fish and end up accumulating in their liver, causing death. I don't know what goes into dog food but I'm sure some of them contain a lot of ground beef, chicken, bacon and artificial flavors.

Fatty infiltration of the liver has been designated as being one of the most common metabolic disturbances and frequent cause of death in aquarium fishes. The connection between excessive lipids and fatty liver disease has been common knowledge in the aquaculture industry for many years. The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at the University of Florida again recently confirmed this in a study involving African cichlids as test subjects. Yet a recent trend in some fish foods is to use higher levels of lipids in the diet, in order to partially spare protein.
Although increasing dietary fat can help reduce the high costs of diets by partially sparing protein in the feed, serious health issues such as excessive fat deposition in the liver are often the end result.

There are many dog and cat foods that use fish as a primary source of protein. Salmon is often used for the high levels of omega 3 fatty acids. Also, salmon is used in dog foods for it's therpuetic value, since many pets have food allergies, which are triggered by exposure to some protein that suddenly causes an allergic reaction. The solution is to use a novel protein that the patient/pet has not been exposed to. The high levels of omega 3's found in salmon, also contribute to the healing process, where there might be a skin reaction, from the allergen. Also, many cat foods contain various fish sources, because the public has been convinced by pet food companies, that cats love fish. Many pet foods contain fish. Chicken and beef are not always the standard.
