Any kind of structure will do. More hiding places the better. I'm currently doing this right now with my small Umbee's.
Rule number one, always have a backup plan just incase.

In the wild the only fish a pair of dovii will tolerate in its breeding territory is h, nicaraguense.
If this strange exceptance can be expected in an aquarium I can't say. With vigilance and a back up plan it's possibly worth trying. Instinct runs deep, it may work.
