I recently started a 10gallon background (pictures of tank here:http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326152 ) and I'm thinking I want to coat it with something. Anyway I'm wondering if

1) "Bondo: All Purpose Fiberglass Resin" is aquarium safe? (says 100% waterproof but I don't think that has to do with leaching)
2) Going through the actual fiberglass process (with the cloth) would be killer one the background so would just coating the cement still work for sealing off the cement?
3) If 1 and 2 are no, then what is easy to find and could work?

Thanks.

this has been up awhile so ill answer the best i can

Fiberglass Resin when fully cured is considered by EPA and OSHA inert ...we through out waste at work in regular garbage... - landfill-leaching into human water supply...dosent really answer your question but gov says it wont hurt your kids..this is all resin and glass , polyester /epoxy/hi temp

you dont need to add glass resin will coat and seal..2 things to consider...fiberglass depending on resin/catalyst generates HIGH temps during cure stage ...im talking up to 400 deg F..will your DIY background take it?..warp? melt? de-laminate?

and second...i have never seen "clear" resin...yellowish green polyester resin/MEK P9 catalyst is the clearest Ive seen..

hope this is helpful

Check out a local fiberglass shop and they have clear resin that is used to make carbonfiber. I've used it to make carbonfiber and it's crystal clear still after 2 years. The heat that is generated depends on how much catalyst you add. This makes the resin cure faster and in turn generates alot of heat. If you don't need strength then you can go without the cloth and just use the resin as a sealer. In any case if you won't be painting it then be sure you use a resin that has UV resistance or it will turn yellow and start to breakdown.

went back and looked at books at work i now believe even cured polyester resin could potential leach into water....i wouldnt use it in my tanks and i can get it free....

then again i said screw it and bought an aquaterra
