fibreglass tank update

I took delivery of my 300g fibreglass tank mid may. It was so stressful trying to get it to where I wanted it. I knew the external dimensions of the tank and measured everything to make sure it would fit through doorways and just generally made sure that this tank wasn't going to give me any nasty surprises. According to my measuring it would be tight, but it would go.

Then when the tank came we started getting it inside and it soon became apparent that the external dimensions they'd quoted on the website were slightly off. The tank was a couple of centimetres bigger than quoted and we had a real problem. Anyway, several doors taken off their hinges and a breakfast bar completely dismantled and a load of cussing later, I had it in the room I intend to put it. The first picture shows the tank only.

Then it was a simple case of making a stand, I didn't want the tank on the floor. Not only will raising it up make viewing the fish better, but more importantly it makes it possible to gravity feed from my overflow into my intended filtration receptacle, a 45g drum situated right at the side of it. The second picture is the tank on it's stand. In time the styrofoam will be hidden.

Then I built a canopy. It has six removable panels, all of which will have catches on just in case of jumpers. In the middle is a large tri-wall polycarbonate roofing sheet. Again this will have catches fitted. My led lights will sit on top of the polycarbonate
sheet. The third picture shows the tank on it's stand with the canopy fitted.

The tank will remain in the room shown but not in that position. My 180, which my brothers having, is currently where the fibreglass tank will end up. The big move will be next weekend. Today I did a fill test just to check the viewing panel was sound and that my bulkhead was good. It took nearly 3 hours to fill it and thankfully, no leaks. I switched the pump on and got it all running. It ran for a few hours and everything seems to be fine.

Next weekend my brother will be taking my 180 and then, after emptying my fibreglass tank, I will move it into its final resting place, fill it back up, and sort all the filtration out. I'll give another update next weekend and hopefully post some more pics.

Great project, and the tank looks fabulous.
When I tried to move a 300 gallon rubbermaid into a basement, I didn't take into about the door header, and its proximity to the floor, I couldn't get it in without chopping the frame, it stayed outside as a pond, great job getting yours in.
Its funny, I remember thinking at one point a 180 was a big tank, now that I have one, I realize its really not, and also not adequate for large cichlids..

Love it! Love the look of it! Will be nice to see the stand wrapped or whatever you plan and stocked!

What are you planning to house in that bad boy?

A 180g tank IS a big tank, I was quite happy with my two. I got my original 180 in August 2015. In December 2015 I joined this forum and I soon realised I was keeping my fish in a sump!!!! But this will be my final indoor big tank, not because i don't want a bigger one, simply because i'd have to bulldoze the house to get it in!

The room that this tank is in is not a family room so aesthetics and noise, thankfully, are not an issue. Other than putting a bit of trim on the stand to hide the styrofoam I don't think i'll be doing much else with it. There's a lot of storage room under there which I like the idea of.

The main fish in there will be my RTGG. He outgrew his 180 about 12 months ago so his new home is a bit overdue. I've got a few other ideas but I need to be careful. He used to play nice with other fish when he was smaller and in a community tank but I think he may have become a bit grumpy and he may not take too well with sharing his new bachelor pad. Time will tell.

nice.... no problem of humidity?

I've had zero humidity problems from both my 180's. This is just cranking it up a little bit so i'm not too concerned. The canopy panels are all tight fitting, as is the polycarbonate sheet. Moisture will be kept within the tank. And the underside of the canopy is painted with several coats of weathershield paint.

Besides, i'm kind of hoping it does get a bit humid in that room. I'm a big fan of indoor plants, the big jungle type ones. I've never been right successful with them in the past because of the lack of humidity in the house. So a humidity problem could be a blessing in disguise really.

I am the opposite I am afraid of the humidity considering my country humidity ranges from 96% to 64%

So I have all my tanks outside....

Fyi on our side, the popular choice is a overhead sump..... that is laid across the top of the tank... usually 1/3 of the depth... the other 2/3 will be covered with netting and pvc pipes

Maybe you can have your humidity that way lol
