Filter for 120 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
No issues. Does not move water like an fx4 or fx6 but holds lots of Bio. You can get two for under 200 bucks which would do the trick. I have a pretty high bio load in my tank....what are you keeping?? I have a Mata mata turtle in my 120 along with two 7" plecos, 5 SDollars, a 10-11" Lenticulata Pike and a huge sydont cat.

I have a lot of different small and medium sized stuff. Mollies sharks tetras, gouramis. Just regular stuff

120 gallon 48" like mine? I do not think two filters is overkill.....use for bio and the other to polish your water!! For 75-90 bucks each the Sunsun or Aquatop filters are a bargain. The UV is a gimmick as 9 watts is not gonna sterilize a 120 gallon tank but it cant hurt.

It’s a 6 foot 120 (honestly could be a 125 the guy I got it from years ago said it was 120 I just never converted the measurements to gallons) right now I have a marineland 350 penguin and an under gravel filter with two power heads and two bubble tubes. It works fine for bio load right now but the water just doesn’t stay clear for very long which is the main reason I want a canister to hold a ton of media that won’t have to be changed often (the carbon to be specific) because I’m at college so my dad has to already feed fish I don’t want him to have to clean out any more filters than what he’s doing already.

On the SunSun I’ve read reviews of people having them leak just a couple months in. Which isn’t a huge deal on mess because it’s concrete floor and a drain right next to tank.

I don't have carbon in mine, just the bio whatever's, I open monthly now to clean out the sponges

I do have a question for you reguarding the fx4. Do you use the vacuum that can be used with it and if so do you like it?

Mine came with a coupon to get that for free, just have to buy the filter bags. Didn't have cash at the time, keep forgetting to do it.

are they still doing that coupon? That’s something I’d like to get if I get an fx4

I never use carbon. I would nix the under gravel filter if possible and run a good cannister with the penguin 350. Under gravel filters require lots of vacuuming. I prefer water movement with over filtering and a cheap wavemaker to sweep dead spots. Using sand I rarely need to vacuum at all. I honestly swear by the FX filters. I would use an FX6 you wont be sorry.

The flow rate between the two is not that substantial, FX4 at 700gph, FX6 at 950 I think, big difference is the three levels of trays in the FX6 vs 2 in the FX4. If worried about the flow aim it the surface and get extra oxygenation of the water to boot.
If I could afford it I would have got the FX6's instead.
