Hi,

I plan to put a 150 gallon tank in my apt.

I already have a 55 long.. It was using an Eheim canister filter but it leaked, twice. The second time, after having just been cleaned. I cannot have water pouring through the floors (I can get evicted for that :)
So I need a solution that hopefully is pretty leak proof. I did look at the Fluval FX6 anyway,,, bc I need like 600gph.. and seems to have more ability to torque down the cover.. than Eheim's corner snap locks.

My first choice would be probably the FX6 if I could guarantee it couldnt leak.. as that is not possible. Then something as effective that cannot possibly leak. [On the 55 I ended up with a strong powerhead with an aquaclear filter attachment on the bottom,, in one corner and a Penguin 350b HOB on the other]. .

I've never used a wet/dry filter, or a sump,, Ive started looking into these but dont know enough about them yet. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Yup.

Do an overflow to the 55. Put some compartments in the 55 to make a few areas. put a bag filter (or a few in parallel) in one, a bunch of bio media in one, plants if you want in one, and a return pump at the end.

About a million threads on settin these up.

I run a FX5 and a 406 on my 150 gallon and water is crystal clear. I only clean the filters out 1 every 9 months or so and the water flow is still strong.

I haven't tried Eheim to compare and I'm sure they are solid but Fluval has worked well for me. I have another fx5 and a sump on my 225. I really don't like sumps. They are loud, take up a lot of space and unneccessary unless you have a giant tank or a SW. Just my opinion. Others will disagree.

I run two Aquaclear 110s on my 150. I like them fine, but would like a little more flow. Really easy to clean though.

eheim 2262 (or 2260) if it leaks you are doing it wrong. It has better lid seals than an fx6 and is quieter than an fx6.

Is it any safer to have the canister above the waterline rather than below it? Sacrificing just a tad of efficiency for the safety of not having to worry about it draining your tank.

I would go with HOB or Canister if you dont want to risk leaks. Ive had my sump overfill if your not playing attention to it. siphon breaks at spray bar will stop back siphoning but the peace of mind of a canister or HOB.

I'd use a combination wet/dry with a large combination sump under the tank, better water quality more even perimeters.
