All the above choices would be great. But you want to save money or on a budget then AC110 or a HW-404 or both. I buy one at a time mainly because Im on a budget though.

alright i just hit up my budget plan and i could easily muster around $600 to blow on filtration lol. i understand that filters can crap out too, so im thinking i may go with 2 fluval 405's instead.. i like that better than one fx5 for the same price. 340gph X 2.. me likey. why do fish have to poop soooooo much? lol

Water changes is a big plus keeping tanks cleaner and lowering the nitrates. Do more WC's but not over doing it will helps your filters too. Removing more dirty water from the tank during WC's and less dirt trapped in yor filter waiting to be removed. BTW, you can find FX5 on ebay brand new for $199.00 rather then a $600.00 rip off if that is what you seen someone selling a FX5 for that price. And 2 fluval 405's for $300 each is even a bigger rip off. Tons of places sale them alotttt less.

If you're looking to save money I would get an AC110, only $61.95 on amazon. Personally I would use a Fluval 405, $149.99. fx5 is hella overkill for a 75 gallon.

Overkill? if you have tetras and discus or other like set up then yea, if you have a tank housing a giant carpet anemone then you don't hit overkill until you blow the silly thing off the rocks. Every tank is different, depends on what you want to do with it.

to the OP:

The FX5 may not be as nice as some other canisters that have all sorts of w/e on them but it's simple, built like a tank, works well and you get a good value for your $ IMHO. If you want an even cheaper filter that is super simple to use and has a great track record AC110 is pretty win.

Rena XP3 and AC110.

OR

FX5 and AC110

Just remember that somewhere down the road you will probably want to go bigger. The Fx5 will singlehandedly filter upto 125 gallons!

I can get the 405's for around $150, and an Fx5 for about $350.. WC's are a must and i take the time to do them, however currently im a bit iffy on my WC's cause i moved from my dorm which provided the hardest of hard water, back home where my water is soft. any thoughts on this? i have an RO filter but unfortunately the filter only provides me with 1.8g per hour.. so would it be better to use the soft water or stock up on the RO filtered? my oscars seemed to adjust just fine to the soft water cause i was in a massive rush to move back in. hardy fish ftw
