Hendre your fish is thorichthys maculipinnis as Steve pointed out above.
They are best in groups as already stated. I'm sure yours will be fine on his own if no others are available. If you can find another 5 and give them a minimum of 75 gallons you will be In for a treat.
As Duane quite rightly pointed out, these fish do hang out in loose schools outside periods of reproductive behavior.
Pairs will separate from a group for a spawning effort.
Most thorichthys that suffer health issues are normally kept to warm.
Thorichthys comprise of 2 distinct groups regarding care. Group 1, the meeki group. These tend to be the hardier group. Your maculipinnis is from group 1.
Group 2,the helleri group are far more prone to bacterial infections and bloat.
Keep him well oxygenated in a temp no higher than 78 and you should be good.

Agree
They also come from natural waters that are almost nitrate free.
Adding even moderately high nitrate along with temps above 78"F (25'C), may be th reason we see so many with HLLE and bloat

Definitely agree w/ the others. Only way I keep my thorichthys healthy is keep nitrates low and temps around 75f.

Fire mouth is pretty hardy as it is one of the first domesticated cichlid. Other harder to find Thorichthy species are touchy. I lost previously kept thorichthys elioti a few times to bacterial infection (lessions and swollen eye). and bloat, but never HLLE which I have never encountered with hard water fish. I currently have two healthy adult elioti, probably male, and 4 areum grow out that I hope to breed.

Just a FYI, they are no longer called ellioti They are maculipinnis now.
I prefer the old name elioti because it is easier to spell and pronounce. To help spelling it, maculipinnis in Latin means macro penis.

Love these guys. I've got a group of 6 T. Maculipinnis in my 75. They are baby making machines!
Nice color except that the tails seem to be deformed. I have similar deformity in my Maculipinnis and not sure if it is environmentally induced (too high temp) or generic.

I've moved the little guy into my 75 with the bichir as I reshuffle my tanks to cut down on maintenance. All the information is appreciated! Your fish look lovely Jexnell Jexnell
