After some consideration, I decided to take the polypterus back to the store and exchanged him for the one I had originally wanted to get. That one was the least shy of the bunch but because the salesperson pointed out that his tailfin was torn, I bought the more "perfect" one. I'm so glad I decided to go with my original choice! He started exploring and eating almost as soon as I transferred him to the tank. And he doesn't seem bothered by the light or the strong water current. My cat and I are really enjoying watching him swim around!

Impressive. I didn't know their fins could grow back.

The little fella is now in a 36"x18" tank with about 9" of water and eating really well! But I would like to transfer him to a 36"x12"x18" tank because it'll be easier for me to manage. I planned to use the same filtration system (a Fluval U2 and a DIY sponge filter) but the water current is already too strong for my 18" wide tank, so it'll be even more so in the 12". So I'm considering buying a separate filter for the new tank and I'm looking for suggestions. What kind of system could provide enough filtration capacity and sufficient water movement along the entire tank length without an overly strong current? Instead of internal filter types, should I look into HOB or canister filters? Should I combine two different types?

And could I add a small school of dither fish and a gourami or two to this tank while the polypterus is small?

Thanks again for all your advice folks!

I have an Aquaclear. Its a nice filter but I find the sound of the water falling back into the tank quite loud. This tank is in my bedroom so I need something very quiet.

Raise the water level in the tank. Or look into an eheim classic canoste. If rather use an aquaclear tho

I have the Aquaclear running on another tank I'm cycling right now and its filled to the brim. Its still loud enough to be annoying at night. Probably because the tank is right behind my bed, lol!

What about dither fish? I'm thinking of getting some cardinal tetras or danios for now. I'll move them to another tank once the bichir gets large enough to eat them, but if he does happen to eat one before I do so, what are the chances he might get parasites? I know feeder fish are notorious for them. What about tetras and danios?
