Everyone will have there own way to do water changes. I have done 50% changes on my large tanks plenty of times with no problems. I do water changes every two weeks and my tanks are fine. Its really just a matter of opinion and what you feel is good.

Just get some prime, test your water a few times a week and dont clean the filters the same day. You should be fine. Now that I think about it did you have alage in your tank?

use seachem stabilize (i think thats the name lol, i use personally its just not by me) when doing large water change or setting up new tanks, it works flawlessly, it works so well you could through up a tank today with 100% new water, treat the water with stress coat or prime, then put the stabilize in it when the tanks up to temp, then you can put however many fish you want in without fear 20 min after putting the stabilize in, its specifically made to stop what happened to your tank, just make sure if you do try it out to read the directions
