Fish Tank Direct vs Midwest Aquarium - anyone bought from them?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to purchase a New Acrylic Tank within the week.

I have spoke with both Fish Tank Direct and Midwest Aquariums.
Both seem cool, Price is almost exact, time frame is the same, Both were recommended by someone I know.
SO - Have any of you bought from them and how was your experience?

Thanks, Arkangel77

I have a 300 gallon tank from Midwest Custom Aquariums. I have never heard one bad thing about them. The owner, Chris, is a stellar fellow and went the extra mile for me finding a suitable wet/dry filter on Ebay.

My big tank was purchased through FTD. I had a very negative experience dealing with an unscrupulous salesman who lied to me by omission. As it turned out he was a rat fleeing a sinking ship--he left Tenecor right before they folded. In deference to FTD, he was not their salesman for very long. He was located in Arizona where Tenecor was, and FTD was in Florida. I gave FTD a bad review because of the salesman, BUT I am very happy with my tank and would not hesitate to purchase from them again. Years later I spoke to the owner of FTD and the sales manager. They remembered me, "Oh, you're the one who wrote the bad review" I reminded them that my review was solely about the bad salesman and not the tank. I think both Scott and John are OK fellows. If I needed a big tank fabricated, FTD is who I would contact first. I know some other MFK members who have FTD tanks. They are also happy with their tanks.

If you are purchasing a tank, it is imperative to inspect the tank before accepting the tank. The trucker will be in a big hurry to leave. Even though we were instructed to inspect the small 300 gallon tank before accepting it, we did not do so. One of the pallets it was on was damaged a little. Several months later when we were ready to deal with the tank we unboxed it and found a crack in the floor of the tank extending for a corner of an overflow box. Fortunately, we were able to repair it. The shipper was actually liable for it, but we had accepted it. You can believe that when our big tank came, the trucker had to wait while we uncrated it and inspected every inch of the tank. he wasn't happy, but we didn't care.

Thank you for the Input! Sounds like both places are great. I have one last ditch attempt to save what I currently have. If that dose not work out, I will be placing an Order for a new tank very soon!

I got my tank from FTD and had a great experience. I compared with Midwest, but it was much cheaper at the time by like $2K. They raised their prices shortly after I ordered though. The only issue I had was that when they shipped it tank it was just plastic wrapped all over, and was not covered in wooden board like Pacu Mom's picture. There were clear holes in the plastic so I spent a ton of time inspecting the tank which resulted in additional shipping costs to FTD.
