Fish with no eyeballs question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would give it to a lfs or petsmart. just tell petsmart they already have eyeless fish why not take another one.
if youre ok with the idea feed it as a feeder. just pretend you bought it as one. but i dont think you should keep it. thats the kind of stuff you see in horror movies.

I saw a goldfish (pearlscale oranda) at Big Al's that was born without eyes... it was in a tank with lots of healthy goldfish, and the guy at the store said he did well. He was a big fish too!

If you want to take care of it, I would definitely move it to a tank so it may be alone for a bit, if possible. Definitely dose him with antibiotics - Maracyn II and a medicated food (I like Medi-Gold). The only thing that could kill him right now is an infection (think about the wound, very likely to happen!)...

Euthanize the guy if you don't want him. I wouldn't try to give them back to Petsmart - why bother? You would be giving him a worse death and prolonging the suffering.

I say take care of him! Who wouldn't want a blind goldfish, and you'd be surprised at how well they will adapt.

I hand-feed some of my goldfish, but they just naturally come to me. Just try holding some pellets in your hand and gently coaxing the fish there. Maybe try soaking pellets in Garlic Guard or something like that, to increase the scent?

Good luck!

Acer, thanks for the input. You know last night I took my large net and put her in there and tried to hand feed not so much luck getting her to sit still enough to eat it. The good news is in the morning when I released her back into the tank she had eaten all the food I placed in there.

Besides the food medicine, what about Melafix? (that is what I use on my Africans)

Again, I really appreciate it all the feedback from everyone.

Thanks,

I would def give her a little extra attention and keep her.. I agree who wouldnt want a blind goldie..I am sure Lucy will adapt just fine.

I have never posted on this forum previously, I spend most of my time on the African Cichlids forum. This question is in relation to my son's goldfish. He keeps a 5 inch Koi type goldfish I believe that is what it is. He also has a very round little fat goldfish with with large fins that woddles when it swims, not sure what type of goldfish it is. (that explains the description)

This morning he came downstairs and told me "Lucy" his little fat goldfish was missing her eyes. So I went upstairs and took a look and sure enough where her eyes were, there are hollowed out holes. It looks as though she had them sucked out.

Here are my questions:

1. Would his Koi fish have sucked the eyes out of her?
2. Is this a common problem that goldfish can get?
3. Is this related to water conditions? (7.5 PH, 70 degree temp., etc)
4. She can't see to eat so I'm sure I need to "put her to rest," how should I do that?

Any advise would be greatly helpful...thanks in advance.

That's the thing about Koi and GF. People tend to think they are compatable beause they are both coldwater types. But they should never be put together, because the Koi are tougher, will grow larger and will do exactly what yours did-suck the eyes out of the GF.

What the koi did to the GF's eyes, he will do to the GF's sides and eventually start to take off scales if they are still kept together. Even common GF who can match the Koi for agility, are no match let alone a fatty who has trouble swimming anyway.

My 2¢
