Hi i have a 4.5inch flag tail. I had him for like 6 months already and i feel like he havent grow that much. I was wondering what do you guys feed him to pump him up. I been feeding him algae wafer, tiny cichlid gold pellets, and sometime frozen bloodworms and hes still skinny after eating but still poops alot. And theres a lfs selling a 12in+ for a good price and was wondering is it worth getting the bigger one.

What's the tank size and water change schedule?

Might be worth getting the bigger one

but the only downside for getting a bigger flagtail is that i have alot of anubias in my tank and i dont know how the personality on the big ones are.

What type of flagtail do you have? There are a few different types. The one I have is a Semaprochilodus taeniurus yellow morph, and it maxes out at 8".

@munchie, I have raised a few flagtails..... some start eating straight away some take a long time to start eating properly
Once they start eating they grow fairly fast.
i feed mine algae wafers, hikari bottom feeder pellets (the one with the picture of a clown loach on the packet) and they get a cube of bloodworms every day
They also eat cucumber or zuchini which i put down for my clown loaches daily
You can soak some of the sinking pellets in some garlic for a few days, its good for parasites and opens the appetite

I only have one flagtail in each tank as I have read everywhere that the very agressive towards each other once they get big so Ihave been scared to try
They are very placid to any other fish including small fish

They have also not distroyed any of my plants, I have anubias and java ferns. they happy to eat the cucumber
My one grew from 5inches to over 20cm in a year

Here is a picture taken in August, I had bought him in January
As you can see he leaves my plants alone

thats a beautiful tank you got there!
I been feeding mine algae wafer and the mini cichlid gold pellets. but i just realized that the flagtail takes forever to finish one pellet and by the time he finish one pellet the rest are gone already from other fishes. So i just started throwing in more algae wafers now and lets see what happen since other fishes don't eat the algae wafers. my flagtail haven't destory any of anubias yet either.

Thanks@munchie, thats a lovely tank and set up you have too

Yes, they take time to eat one pellet as they dont have teeth so they suck on it and as it softens from being in the water, they eat the soft part
While he is small you can also try and give him a little bit of flakes, he will get more food that way
Yes they do get thicker as they grow!!
I will post a close up picture of mine later, to give you an idea
They also get very tame if you hand feed them
The minute i put my hand in the tank he comes and sucks on it looking fo food!!
They are gorgeous fish to own
