They have really nice colors! my flagtail doesn't have that bright redness to it

When i first got mine, they also had hardly no colour, there were just the black stripes on the tail. The colour came with time.
Flagtails are also not readly available in SA, there are only 2 LFS's that ocasionaly bring a few in and you basically have to put your name down for one.
We are told that they are wild caught and therefore seasonal but Im not sure if this is the truth
There was a shipment that came in at the end of last year where apparently some have yellow tails but there were only 3 I think, in the whole shipment
I saw a picture of one the other day and its beautiful as well

I know you get two species taeniurus and insignis one gets a bit bigger than the other one and I think the taenerius has the yellow tail.
But yours doesnt look yellow and his bottom fin is already red so give him some time

What type of flagtail do you have? There are a few different types. The one I have is a Semaprochilodus taeniurus yellow morph, and it maxes out at 8".
Interesting. I've never really looked into them, so I wasn't aware of different types. This may explain why mine has seemed to maxed out at around 8". I've had it for 3.5 years now, in a 180, since it was a 3 incher.

That's cool. I may actually look into those as a replacement for my pink tail chalceus since mine is a little too jumpy and killed my butterfly fish. Would you think a 70 is okay for them?

Mine would be fine in a 70. These things are hard to come by, so I grabbed him when I got the chance from the lfs. I was hoping for at least 12", but its ok, its still a cool fish as it is20150707_171710.jpg

If they are rare in the US finding one here would be a nightmare. I wonder if there are similar species that will work.

My pink tail is 4"+ and quite the character. I miss my butterfly though
