Flooding on power loss. Fluval 406.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Baskets vs. trays was just because some people call them different things. I call them trays as that is how they are usually listed in the manual.

How tall is the existing filter you want to replace? It sounds as if that would be your most important factor. Or you can measure your stand to see what is the tallest and widest filter that you can fit.

Eheim Pro III.

It is indeed pricey. Found UaruJoey's video showing it and pointing that it has handles to not ruin the clasps. Maybe that's the source of the problem of my 406.

I've googled Eheim and they have WiFi on their filters now... I'm very surprised and deeply confused.
Definitelly worth researching.

Tall is 26 inches, but the problem is width, which is only 9 3/4 inches.
There's lots of storage inside, but the stand doors are done in the dumbest way possible.
There's a panel in the middle and 2 doors on the sides. You can put lots of smal things inside, but not one large thing, because it won't fit through the door opening.

I can google up the brands, but from my perspective, they all have a flimsy plastic clasp mechanism.
My issue is that on power loss it seems to be "too much pressure" for the clasps and the top of the canister flies off with the obvious concequences.

I've replaced the valve, cuz the original was slow-leaking. I'm not entirely sure if the issue was present with the old valve, but re-connecting the hoses to test is a pain.

The only canister I've seen with clasps that seem good enough to trust, is fluval FX, cuz it has massive screws instead of flimsy plastic, but that definitelly won't fit. FX are like half width of the stand.
I think all the canisters are more or less the same on how they're built (it's just "bigger faster motor" and "moar trays").
I'm looking for something that won't leak cuz a piece of plastic has shaved off over time.

I think the problem you are having with the filter top popping off is due to either a worn gasket or a combination of that and damaged clamps. Those 2 reasons are the ones I've heard complaints on in my years on these forums. I would not expect to see that on a new canister filter unless someone did not keep up with regular maintenance and replacement of parts that are normal wear and tear items.

If you have been happy with the Fluval series filters, just get another model that fits both your cabinet space and your price.

I use the Eheim Classic filters on a couple of my aquariums and love them. They do not have media trays because the filter media is just stacked on top of each other and I don't have trouble with cleaning them or maintaining them.

Some people use the Sunsun brand of filters, Fluval, Eheim, Marineland, and other brands of canister filters and are happy with them. It all comes down to what you want to pay and how much room you have in your filter cabinet or stand to fit them.

Now that I think about, I haven't been fully happy with fluval. The 206 has issues starting and after years of usage, it's no longuer "hermetical".

There was lots of times, when it just stops pumping water and runs dry. To be fair, it happened a couple of times lasting days and it didn't burn (I was away, the tank sitter didn't notice).

There was plenty of times when the filter decided to push carbon in the tank for some reason and it did leak, but I never trusted it anyways, so my canisters always sit in a container, which did save me multiple times.

I know how prevent all those things with fluvals, thus "it runs fine" statement. The top flying off is just a problem that's "definitelly not fine" :grinno:

BF also pointed I wake up in the middle of the night because "the filter doesn't sound right" (which saved his floors from my aquarium).

I think I've just realized I'm done with fluval (at least with the format I have).
I need to hear the crap that people's filters do, so I can choose the brand with less issues.

The Eheim Pro III is the latest Eheim filter I own. I seem to remember reading several members preferring the Pro III models to the later models due to the later models having too much un-needed fluff (like WiFi) that made them more complex and less reliable???? Just going off my memory here!
