NORTH CAROLINA
so, i may not be going to costa rica next week, but if not i am going to florida. i was wondering if there is anything i should know? and i aslo saw that there are alot of non-native species there...?

What part of Florida? I know a ton of good spots up north. Not as many invasives but I can guarantee you a rattlesnake or 10 if you go herping with me.

um, probably the evrglades. i thin if we go we will moving all over to see different stuff. we are also doing a bunch of other stuff. but my dad and i are going to spend a majority of the time looking for snakes and turtles. here is the website i was talking about:

http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/herpetology/checklist/Flaherps.htm

on lizards mostly there are lots of invasives
there are chameleons and lots of anoles and spiny tail iguanas and african rock pythons and boa constrictiors and what not. there are many things i dont even know about

and also the reason florida sounds fun is because first there are many many really cool thing s there and also i wont have to worry about venomous snakes there. i already know all of them. and i know (obviously ) not to try to habdle one of those. althought i have seen people pick up baby caimands

Your travel plans sure do change fast. I dunno how tolerable the everglades are this time of the year, there will be clouds of insects.

the reason we changed plans is because there is like a 90% chance we are NOT getting on that plane to costa rica, so the only other 2 places we were interested in where the bahamas or florida. i know floridas not very "exotic" but from what i've heard theres some good herping

you are basically not allowed to herp the everglades, you have to look for good spots around it otherwise you could be fined for even having a snake hook on you (trust me, i know). If you want to find a bunch of snakes, you need to go roadcruising. This is where you drive along the roads around 7pm-2am to find snakes that are out basking on the pavement or dirt. the best way to do this is to look for a wildlife management area (not a state park) that has a lot of roads throughout it and ride along those. They allow hunting in these areas so snake hunting is okay too unless there are signs telling you that you need a permit to hunt the land (usually not the case though). Down south you are going to find a bunch of common things like garters and racers and you may see a few scarlet snakes or ribbon snakes. There is also an area around there that produces some of the world largest pygmy rattlesnakes (I know of several that were caught in this area that were nearly 30" and one of them holds the record of 31").

Good luck and be careful.
PS, the website you posted, I work for them....
