Oregon, it's part of 'Murica!
As some of you already know, I have been trying to breed my shortbody ZZ with my female parrot but am not sure if he is mature enough to breed. He shows signs that he wants to breed with her (shaking head, digging in gravel, clean flower pot to spawn in) The female would sit in one of the flower pots and shoo him away and her tube would never drop any further and swell like she was about to lay eggs. She has laid eggs with 2 other male parrots in the past. They about the same size.

I separated them for a day and re introduced them and the male went nuts and started his usual "want to spawn" behavior as soon as she hit the water but they have yet to lock lips and circle each other.

The male isn't overly aggressive where he attacks the female, if anything she pushes him around. He did kill my male trimac of similar size in the past.

Few questions, answer as many as you can please:

1. What age/size would an average ZZ male start wanting to breed?
2. Anyone know the age/size a coin shaped shortbody flowerhorn (mine) would start to breed.
3. Would a male flowerhorn that hasn't hit sexually maturity try to breed?
4. Would being a fader make it take longer to mature?
5. Do faders fade before/during/after reaching maturity.
6. Should I put her in with the male parrot and right before they spawn switch them out?
7. Anyone have any good tips on how to get them to spawn.

1. Female ZZ's can start breeding as early as 3 inches.
2. I would assume it would be the same as any other ZZ, although you might run into some fertility issues since your fish is a shortbodied fh.
3. No, when its ready to breed it will, if not it wont.
4. I wouldn't see how being a fader would affect the age of maturity so I would say no.
5. They can fade at any given time.
6. 99% of male parrots are sterile so I don't think your breeding project will work.
7. Clean and warm water and foods high in protein.

Good luck.

Thank you.

As for the male parrot thing I was thinking of putting the female with the male and get her into a breeding mood then reintroduce her with the male flowerhorn.

The female has always spawned during the last week of the month so heres hoping!
