Thanks, I guess pellets would probably be better because they are nutritionally complete, but I think it is fun to feed food that isn't pellets once in awhile as a treat, if not for the fish for the keeper because you see a little bit of different behavior from the fish and it doesn't effect the health of the fish really.

That would depend on what one is feeding, and the individual fish. Some foods are fairly risk free, others not so much. I once saw a FH at a LFS that I supplied that lost a $500 fish due to some mental midget deciding that it would be fun to feed it a few feeders. The FH was dead in less than a week.

Oof that sucks, I think most hobbyist know that you should not to feed any fish feeders(I'm guessing you mean feeder goldfish). It sucks that Flowerhorns have such weak genetics, but the good thing is I actually do like the look of some low quality flowerhorns(ex Andy woods' flowerhorn) and I heard they are healthier than higher quality ones.

It's all inbreeding that happens causes issues to amplify.

I guess frozen food from hikari like krill, brine shrimp gut loaded with spirulina, blood worms make a good treat and are safe.

I'll tell you what. I ordered the new formula NLS Float pellets for my FH. Never seen such a mess in my entire fish feeding life. Even my Piranha (rest their fishy souls) didn't make such a mess with their food. FH excitedly gobbles the pellets. Pieces everywhere. Spit out. Back in. Pieces everywhere. Spit out. Bite. Bite. Pieces everywhere. Spit out. Cloudy tank water after pellet particles everywhere. I only fed it 4. Never again, ever. Wow. I'll stick to Hikari and Northfin.

He just needs to get used to it. That's why he spit it out. I would say starve for sometime and try again.

Consider that in nature A trimaculatus is an advanced predator (by analysis of wild caught individuals stomach contents),
but then what it is hybridized with to get a FH.
Some say Vieja, a frugivore (a fruit eater) or......
if it a one of the Herichthys, primarily omnivores, that when stomach contents of wild caught individuals are analyzed is often 50% algae.
