I found these things called “Spongilla” at a science supply site and was wondering if they where really true freshwater sponges. If they are then how do I keep them alive (current, food, light, safe fish, etc.)? I think these things look kind of cool and just want to know if they can be kept in an aquarium. Here are some pics I found.

There are around 150 known freshwater sponges, most are spongillas. most are drab encrusting growths but some form globes or fingers, about 30 are found in North America. They are filter feeders and eat mainly bacteria and fine particles of organic detritus, they grow slowly and many cool water ones die off in fall after forming gemmules to start growth in the spring.

Your saying I would keep one of these just like I would a freshwater clam (throw it in and leave it alone)? I think I'm going to get some now. How big do they get?
